Summary on Grant Application Form |
Th aim of this research is to determine the cause of loss in ferroelectric thin films. There is enormous interest in ferroelectric materials for use in a) ferroelectric random access memories and in the use of ferroelectrics for b) frequency agility or tuning. Our interest is in frequency agility. The principle is quite straightforward. A ferroelectric material changes its dielectric constant on application of an electric field. Thus, if, for example, a superconducting film is deposited on a ferroelectric layer, when a field is applied to the ferroelectric and the dielectric constant is made to change this will alter the resonant frequency of the HTS resonators making the filter. The big problem is that the ferroelectric films used to carry out the tuning are extremely lossy. This renders the filter useless. Thus there is an urgent need for two lines of research. First we need to determine where the losses arise (e.g. strain effects etc) and second we need to evaluate new ferroelectrics other than the commonly used BaSrTiO3. PLD is ideal for the rapid analysis of different ferroelectric materials.
