The current technology in NIR spectrometers provides high-resolution spectra at the expense of portability and robustness. This is particularly true in clinical situations where the need is to conduct measurements at the bedside or in theatre. Rather than improve resolution still further, we have developed a compact, low cost, and extremely robust near infrared Fourier transform spectrometer. The system is computer controlled for self-alignment and for the acquisition of data. With novel control and mirror alignment, the accurate parallel motion of one mirror with respect to the other is no longer an issue. A new instrument will be developed to incorporate a two-colour detector (silicon/lead salt) for the simultaneous determination of short and long wave spectra, for complementary and cross validation of results. With further software interfacing for signal processing and user-friendly operation, haemoglobin (short wave NIR) and glucose (long wave NIR), in vivo clinical testing, subject to ethical approval, will involve testing the instrument for assessing the severity of tissue ischaemia.
