The application of combinatorial techniques in synthetic organic chemistry is well known. This proposal sets out to explore the application of such methodology to the discovery of amorphous and crystalline phases of molecular materials. Two key enabling technologies will be studied - firstly the design of an appropriate microcrystalliser (max volume 0.5 ml) that allows liquid mixing, controlled nucleation, and control of supersaturation as well as the removal of solid product and - secondly the application of optical tomography and Raman microscopy to the location and characterisation of solid products within such a device. The outcome of the project would be a successful design of crystalliser, an assessment of the use of the techniques and a working, tested prototype.
