Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme combines the expertise of two teams to deal with related problems concerning the effects of increased aberrations and scattered light on functional visual performance. There are two principal aspects to this work:1. The development of novel instrumentation and measurement techniques that will allow the rapid and accurate measurement of the amount of angular distribution of light scattered in the eye, and the real-time measurement and correction of aberrations in the eye.2. The investigation of functional visual performance using psychophysical techniques with a system that incorporates adaptive optics to correct (or indeed, vary at will) the aberrations of the eye. The limits and problems of functional vision that may arise with diffraction limited images will be investigated. The novel instrumentation will allow us to separate unambiguously the effects of increased light scatter and aberrations. We also propose to carry out preliminary studies to demonstrate how objective assessment of the amount of angular distribution of light scatter in the eye can have important applications in monitoring the effects of ageing, time course of disease, drug therapy and outcome of surgery.
