The research aims to improve the management of patients recovering from cancer of the larynx by developing an on-line computer system which gives objective measures of a patients voice quality over a period of 1 year to track and plan speech therapy. The investigation builds upon a highly successful study of objective voice quality techniques (GR/L51546). The proposal seeks to develop enhanced objective voice quality assessment techniques to provide accurate, reproduceable graded measures of patient voice normality, based on analysis of spectral frequency-phase, complexity or synthesis of periodic and transient features/parameters in the speech waveforms, and to develop intelligent voice quality assessment based upon the time and frequency domain features that accurately reflect expert normal-abnormal categorisation and sub-classification by Speech and Language Therapists. The results of these investigations will be embedded within a robust computer controlled clinical workstation for the analysis and monitoring of an individual's voice quality. This will then be used to address individual quality of life issues by monitoring voice quality in the clinic as part of the thrust to improve larynx cancer patient radiotherapy treatment, recovery patterns in follow-up and indicators for intervention/rehabilitation.
