Summary on Grant Application Form |
Isotope fractionation of the metal(loid)s in volatile metal species, which have been identified to be generated in municipal waste deposits and sewage treatment works (eg tetramethyl tin, trimethylstibine, dimethyl telluride), will be investigated by using a cryotrapping cryofocusing gas chromatography (GC) coupled to inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Since the established method using a quadrupole ICP-MS suffers from poor precision for the determination of isotope ratio measurement of transient signals, the GC will be coupled to two newly installed ICP-MS (Time-of-Flight IC-MS and Multi-collector magnetic sector ICP-MS). The Time-of-flight (TOF) ICP-MS is regarded as the ideal mass spectrometer for precise isotope ratio measurements for very short transient signals (eg from capillary GC) whereas the Multicollector-magnetic sector (MC-MS) ICP-MS can achieve a theoretically better precision of isotope ratios due to the real simultaneous detection. The isotope ratio of the volatile metabolites containing metal(loid)s generated by different isolates from environmental sources such as anaerobic sediments will be monitored and compared to the ratios measured for these compounds generated by chemical reactions. These findings will be compared to the isotope ratio measurements from environmental sources of volatile metal(loid) compounds in order to establish if significant isotope fractionation of metal(loid)s occurs in the environment.
