Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary objective is the continuous development of processing technology for production of low-cost high current coated (RE)BaCuO superconductors on metallic and ceramic substrates. The programme addresses scientific and technical objectives and aims to generate (1) new scientific knowledge in areas relating to high-rate production of coated conductors by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE), and (2) novel process technology developed to a prototype level for exploitation by UK industry. Coated conductors have three components: (i) the substrate, (ii) the buffer layer, and (iii) the superconducting layer; this programme gives primary emphasis to growth of the superconducting layer, there will be work on buffer layers only where necessary to enable deposition research. The substrates will be supplied from related projects. Continuous controlled atmosphere LPE will be carried out in the standard 'vertical' configuration as well as using novel 'horizontal' designs. Advanced LPE concepts will be explored including 'vapour-solid-liquid' processing for epitaxial (RE)BaCuO growth. In the course of the work new enabling science will be generated including thermodynamic data for mixed rate earths, solidification.
