The research is aimed at extending Large Eddy Simulation to the calculation of the flow through high Reynolds number turbine stages such as occur in aircraft and land based gas turbines. The purpose is to provide a reliable and accurate method of computing the flow, in particular unsteady aspects such as vortex-blade interactions and vortex breakdown processes, so as to improve ability to design. Unsteady effects are known to contribute significantly to losses in turbines and LES will allow an improved understanding of the underlying physics. An important aspect of the project will concern the development of improved near wall models for use in LES of high Reynolds number flows over solid surfaces. The methods to be considered will include various wall function approaches, a one-dimensional turbulence formulation and LES combined with a one-equation RANS turbulence model for the sub-layer. The performance of the method will be evaluated through comparisons with the available and extensive experimental data in axial flow. The programme of work proposed is closely linked to the activities of the EPSRC Consortium on Large Eddy Simulation for Aerospace and Turbomachinary Aerodynamics; grant number GR/M50539. The research described will make an important contribution to the Consortium.
