Summary on Grant Application Form |
We seek funding for a 12 parallel processor state-of-the-art SGI computer for the investigation of quantum effects in nonlinear optics, atomic and plasma physics, and molecular spectroscopy. The common denominator of these simulations of the numerical methods used such as matrix diagonalisation, Monte-Carlo simulations and those for the solution of partial differential equations. These require a large amount of CPU time but can effectively be helped by parallelisation. The specific research projects are in the areas of quantum and nonlinear optics, on one side, and atomic, molecular and plasma physics, on the other. They all demand the description and numerical simulation of quantum mechanical processes. They are: 1) Use of quantum entanglement for reducing fluctuations in the recording of images and in the manipulation of optical information; 2) Quantum mechanical computation of electron-atom collision processes; 3) Quantum stochastic resonance in optical parametric oscillators; 4) Formation and manipulation of Bose-Einstein condensates; 5) Quantum mechanical computation of molecular structure and molecular collision processes; 6) Atomic/molecular population and plasma modelling for thermonuclear fusion and astrophysics.
