Summary on Grant Application Form
The synthesis of well defined, novel branched polymers based on polystyrene by a combination of anionic polymerisation methods and those used for dendritic and hyperbranched polymers is proposed. Polystyrene macromonomers with molecular weights ranging from below to well above entanglement molecular weight will be synthesised by routes that will leave reactive functional groups at both ends, the generic structure being A2B. These A2B functionalised polymers will be coupled together using two methods. Firstly, a low tech route where the macromonomers are reacted together in a 'one-pot' synthesis to produce hyperbranched polymers (HyperMacs). Secondly, dedritic versions will be prepared (DendriMacs) using a convergent route and protection/deprotection chemistry. The progress of reaction will be followed using SEC and dilute solution properties/thermal analysis will provide basic physico-chemical properties. The synthetic methods when defined will be extended to polymers based on other monomer units (eg ethylene oxide).
