Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to study (i) the kaleidoscopic and fractal characteristics of unstable-cavity modes and (ii) the properties of single-cycle optical pulses. We will investigate the mode structure of unstable cavity lasers for different intra-cavity aperture geometries with special reference to their kaleidoscopic and fractal characteristics. We will seek to discover the origin of their fractal character and to measure the fractal dimension of the 2D mode patterns. We will develop techniques for generating higher-order modes, and examine the properties of unstable cavity lasers with arbitrary geometries with a view to new applications. We will study single-cycle optical pulse with particular reference to mid-IR Optical Parametric oscillators (OPOs) where few-cycle pulses are experimentally realisable. We will develop techniques for modelling OPOs outside the slowly-varying Envelope Approximation, and apply them in the modelling of actual experiments at St Andrews University a well as in other contexts in laser physics and non-linear optics. Each component of the application involves collaboration with groups at other universities, namely the University of Leiden and the University of Salford for the kaleidoscope laser work, and the University of St Andrews for the few-cycle pulse OPO.
