Nanoporous metal oxide thin films are attracting interest for a wide range of optoelectronic applications, such as dye sensitised photovoltaic cells. Limited, and poorly controlled, film fabrication routes are a key factor impeding device development. Device applications have been largely limited to date to sol/gel fabricated nanocrystalline TiO2 films. We propose here to extend these studies to alternative film fabrication techniques (in particular CVD) and alternative metal oxides (particularly ZnO). The motivation for these studies are:- Improved control of film fabrication. Compared to existing sol/gel routes, the proposed routes should allow greater control of film properties and is more amenable to reproducible industrial scale up.- Reduction of production costs. Incorporation of TiO2 film deposition into float glass production line should minimise film production costs.- Application to plastic substrates. Low temperature film fabrication will allow use of a range of novel substrates (eg: shaped/flexible substrates for consumer products).The project will include the development of novel film fabrication methodologies, and also the systematic evaluation of these films in device applications including dye sensitive solar cells, biosensors and photoelectrochromic windows.
