We seek to develop new composite structures to overcome the limitationsof conventional granular adsorbents. Use of granules restricts the design of the filter bed and attrition leads to an increase in pressure drop or development of leakage pathways through the bed. We plan to marry our experience in producing novel metal-carbon materials with ceramic foam technology to combine the advanced adsorptive properties of the former with the superior dynamic flow and structural advantages of the latter. We have shown it is possible to produce high area, coherent carbon coatings supported on an alumina foam. The work will evaluate a range of foam materials and their pore architecture as supports for carbon and metal-carbon coatings. The preperation conditions for optimum film thickness and pore size distribution of the carbon layer will be determined using our controlled rate activation methods. The materials will be characterised for their physical, chemical adsorptive properties and the best selected for filtration testing. Performance will be compared to that of conventional 'Wheterlite' materials. Surface science techniques will be used to investigate the apparently different mechanisms of HCN adsorption found with our metal-carbon adsorbents. The results will inform the design of enhanced ceramic foam supported metal carbon systems.
