Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research provides a route for developing enantioselective transfer hydrogenation reactions where the catalyst resides on a thin film of hydrophilic solvent on the surface of a porous glass bead. The use of glass beads will enable the catalyst to be recycled and will leave the organic product uncontaminated with the transition metal catalyst.Using formic acid as the reducing agent, methodology will be established for employing catalytic base. Subsequently, catalytic base will be incorporated into the glass bead catalyst allowing a very straightforward method for the asymmetric reduction of ketones in an environmentally benign fashion. This basic methodology will be applied to a range of ketones.Related, but more speculative research will investigate the plausibility of employing ultrasound to assist in biphasic catalytic reactions. The Leuckardt reaction and an unusual conjugate addition reaction will also be explored.
