Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme is centred on the application of a combination of spectroscopic techniques to study the electronic and magnetic states of a new generation of bulk amorphous magnetic alloys. Until recently amorphous alloys had to be produced by rapid quenching at the rates of order 10^6 degrees per second restricting the form of materials to thin films and ribbons, and greatly limiting the scope for applications. However the methods have been developed to enable a new generation of amorphous alloys to be produced in the bulk at normal casting speeds with an exciting range of magnetic properties from the very soft to the very hard . As outlined in the list of objectives the aim of the project is to undertake a pilot study of the basic electronic and magnetic properties of a selected Fe-Based series using in-house and facilities-based techniques. Structural characterisation will include X-ray Diffraction and Electron microscopy (XRD and TEM), while magnetic measurements and spectroscopies include VSM, MOKE, XPS, MXCD, and Magnetic Compton scattering and electron-induced spin-polarisation electron emission.
