Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to examine a coupled system of singular reaction-diffusion equations arising as a model of isothermal chemical autocatalysis with termination in which the orders of autocatalysis and termination are fractional (and hence the nonlinearities are not Lipschitz continuous). The scalar approximation of this coupled system has been extensively studied by the above named investigators [ SIAM J.Appl. Math. 59 (3) 870-899 (1999) and SIAM J. Appl.Math.. (to appear) ] and will form the basis for the proposed research. The aim of the proposed research is to obtain an as near complete as possible understanding of the coupled system, in particular the types of solution present and the parameter ranges over which they exist. We expect not only that the behaviour found in the scalar problem ( travelling waves, finite time extinction, lifting at infinity, threshold behaviour and dead cores) will again be observed in the system albeit over different parameter ranges, but that new types of behaviour will be observed, due to the coupling through non-lipschitz terms.
