The proposed close collaboration of two laboratories in Cambridge with DERA aims to extend our fundamental knowledge to improve DERA's capability of predicting the emission of electro-magnetic radiation from rocket exhaust plumes and pyrotechnics. One significant area requiring investigation is the modelling of condensed phase (ie solid) species, present in large concentrations, particularly in pyrotechnics and air-breathing rocket motors. In fact, the emission from such tiny particles usually dominates the signature from plumes in the uv and far ir regions of the spectrum. This proposal to study the flame chemistry of akaline earths is in response to recent interest in the near ir signatures of rocket plumes. The potential for their halides, etc, to exist in a rocket of pyrotechnic plume and radiate in the spectral region of 1 to 2 microns will be assessed. Fundamental kinetic and thermodynamic data will be derived for high temperature species and chemical reactions for incorporation into DERA's much-used suite of predictive codes for rocket exhaust plumes and pyrotechnic combustion. Th results of modelling studies by DERA experts using this new information will be compared with data on real rocket or pyrotechnic plumes.
