Summary on Grant Application Form |
We intend to devise chemical methods for the controlled fabrication of nanostructures with pre-determined order in one, two or three dimensions. The principal strategy employed will be the self-assembly of structures from a solution of their components, in many cases simply by evaporating a drop of such a solution on a suitable substrate. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy will be the major characterisation techniques employed. The systems of interest will be composed of Au, Ag and Au/Ag alloy nanoparticles. While the spontaneous formation of complex ordered structures from solutions of metal or semiconductor clusters has been observed in some fortuitous cases, the factors that govern the self-assembly process, and the synergistic relationship between these factors, remain to be studied in detail. Important key parameters, which we aim to control experimentally, are particle size, shape and surface chemistry and the nature and topography of the substrate. Template effects of friction transferred polymer films and surfactant systems on different substrates will be exploited for the fabrication of gold nanowires.
