Summary on Grant Application Form |
Coupling between the internal and external flow of a bas turbine combustor is largely ignored by engine manufacturers. Recent work by the investigator using LDA instrumentation has demonstrated considerable unsteadiness in both the internal and external flow fields of a combustor. Internal flow unsteadiness is of great concern due to its detrimental effect on combustor performance and engine life. Many causes are suspected as the source of this unsteadiness but one cause is due to the history of the flow feeding (and controlling) the combustion process. To further understand any possible link between the internal/external flow fields it is necessary to be able to correlate the internal and external flow structures in a way that planar PIV will allow. The programme outlined below will provide a way to investigate this suspected interaction.1. Select and purchase a commercial PIV system2. Commission the system on a water analogy rig of a simplified combustor3. Conduct PIV investigation of coupled internal/external combustor flows at bleed ratios of 0-50% and jet to cross-flow ratios of 2 to 54. Report findings in Journal format
