Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research in Oxford in synthetic chemistry underpinning this proposal all depends heavily on x-ray diffraction methods for unambiguous structure assignment. The research programmes of the 20 or more members of academic staff and ca 150 research workers involved cover the complete range from fundamental to applied research. The development of new synthetic methodologies with complete characterisation of the products and intermediates is a central theme of many of the projects. However, much of the research is also interdisciplinary in nature with a strong biological or biomedical relevance for several of the organic and inorganic programmes. Representative examples are new organic and inorganic compounds with potential anti-cancer activity. Catalysis is also strongly represented with particular interests in asymmetric synthesis, both in terms of the intermediates involved and the development of new catalysts for olefin polymerisation, olefin metahtesis, carbonylations and coupling reactions. The interface with materials science is strongly featured with significant programmes in functionalised organic polymers and new inorganic materials such as mesoporous solids. In addition there is an extensive programme of fundamental x-ray crystallographic research on topics such as phase transitions and new software development. All are currently hampered by lack of diffractometer time with the existing facilities.
