Summary on Grant Application Form |
A Research network in the area of magnetic and related data storage processes will be established. The initial membership will comprise 10 UK academic groups (the Universities of Aston, Central Lancashire, Coventry, Exeter, Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth and Sheffield), 2 EU Academic groups (LETI, Grenoble and Twente) And 5 Industrial members (Hewlett Packard, MPO, Nibus, Plasmon and Pulstec). The network scope will include longitudinal and perpendicular magnetic recording, Magneto-optic and phase-change optical recording. Scanning probe based recording, MRAM recording and new Technologies (i.e. completely new developments yet to be discovered). A number of initial scientific goals to guide network discussions and activities are described in the objectives section above. A Technological goal guiding network activities is to identify storage techniques and processes that are suitable for data storage at densities and data rates of the order 100-400Gbits/Sq in a 500-1000Mbps
