Summary on Grant Application Form |
As bit size is decreased, the noise associated with the magnetic structure of information storage media becomes more important and advanced metal particle tapes are now media noise limited. This project is aimed at improving the understanding of the physics of noise in these systems. Anhysteretic magnetisation properties of metal particle media will be investigated in order to establish ways of producing non-uniform magnetic depth profiles in tapes using a write head, whish will then be used in the noise investigations. After validation of the technique, the associated noise will be measured for a range of profiles. By investigating the change in noise characteristics as the profile is changed, the spatial distribution of noise sources will be determined. Noise from surfaces and interfaces and from within magnetic layers to be separated and the effects of changing physical properties such as surface roughness, substrate texture and interfacial diffusion will be determined. In addition, switching fields in double magnetic layers will be measured and the effects of inter-layer interaction on individual layer reversal will be investigated. Noise characteristics will be related to physical properties and strategies developed for further noise reduction.
