Summary on Grant Application Form
The work proposed here revolves around the basic question of the effect of electron-electron interactions on the motion of electrons in metals. The resistivity of conventional metals is understood in terms of Bloch-Boltzmann transport theory. This is based on the assumption that electrical conductivity occurs via the motion of reasonably well defined electron quasiparticles relatively weakly scattered by disorder and lattice vibrations. The theory is an extremely successful description of the properties of many metals, but it has become clear in recent years that there are wide classes of compounds & circumstances where it fails. It is believed that the failure is related to the importance of electron-electron interactions, & it is suspected that the breakdown of the quasiparticle approximation may be important, but there is as yet no clear understanding. This proposal requests funds to support the examination of the properties of several classes of materials in which different types of inconsistencies between data and conventional theories manifest themselves particularly sharply.
