Summary on Grant Application Form |
In-fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) are now familiar as optical gauges for longitudinal strain measurements in a wide variety of structures. We propose research into compound grating structures and multicore fibre gratings to measure shape and tranverse strain. Initial applications lie in defence and aerospace, such as flexible antenna structures, hydrophone arrays or impact detection, with wider possibilities for dynamic measurements with a thin, flexible all-optical load cell.We propose to investigate the potential of new fibre grating sensing elements for measurements of local curvature and of transverse strain with temperature compensation, and their application to aerospace and structural monitoring problems defined by our collaborators at DERA. The programme will combine the expertise of the Aston University group in grating design and fabrication with that of the Heriot-Watt University Group in fibre interferometry and sensor evaluation.
