Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is the determination of the dynamical processes involved in the evolution, structure and eventual breaking of waves in density-stratified and/or rotating fluid flows. Such waves are a major feature of the ocean and atmosphere, and it is in these areas that this project has its principal emphasis. Beyond that, however, the results will have significance for a wide class of environmental and industrial fluid flows. The methodology will be a combination off mathematical analysis and numeriacal simulations. On the analytical side the main approach is the development of a suite of generic, canonical amplitude equations with a wide range of validity. The numerical simulations will be based on high-resolution spectral codes, with the primary aim of validating and complementing the analytical theory.
