Summary on Grant Application Form |
Tokamaks are magnetically- confined devices that have been built for the study and eventual generation of nuclear fusion. However several major problems must be solved before nuclear fusion in tokamaks can be realised and commercially exploited, including, for example, energy loss in the tokamak, the efficiency of neutral beam and radio frequency methods for heating, and the rate of nuclear reactions within the tokamak. Spectroscopic diagnostic techniques can provide vital information on these plasma processes, and we therefore propose a programme to calculate electron excitation rates for a number of species, which are required for the reliable evaluation of such diagnostics. The atomic data generated by us will be incorporated into the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) packages, and used in the analysis of spectral observations from the tokamaks at the Culham Laboratory and the Joint European Torus (JET) by our collaborators at these institutes. However through their inclusion in ADAS, it is envisaged that our results will also be extensively employed by members of the tokamak community elsewhere in the world.
