Summary on Grant Application Form |
The last year has seen the launch of two digital television services in the UK, Sky and On Digital, with further launches due from cable companies such as Cable and Wireless, NTL and Telewest. BT is also readying an advanced network option. Each of these services promises to offer interactive content and Sky has already launched its interactive service called Open. The number and size of the companies investing in this arena suggests that interactive TV is set for rapid growth. Sky and OnDigital now have close to 2m subscribers and Sky is reportedly signing up 60000 subscribers each week. Since this is such a new and evolving medium there has been little chance for either developers or researchers to engage with it. We do however have some indications of the general characteristics of the interactive TV domain: (1) the audience for interactive TV services will be much more diverse than that for PC or web-based information; (2) the information channels will be diverse; (3) the TV is at the social centre of many UK households; (4) usability will be critical in the design of interaction strategies; (5) the concept of 'user' in this domain is replaced by 'viewer' or 'digital consumer'.
