Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed programme is to build upon the body of data already obtained regarding reaction rates on insulator surfaces, but to direct the current research specifically at separating diffusional effects from energetic or steric effects. In contrast to solution, the rate of diffusion on the surface of silica gel, for example, is a sensitive function of the heat of adsorption and consequently of molecular identity. A systematic study of reaction rates as a function of surface pretreatment and sample temperature will yield valuable insights into the factors controlling reaction kinetics on surfaces. By taking several molecular systems and looking at both energy and electron transfer rates between the same reacting pairs of molecules where one of these is firmly anchored to the surface, it will be possible for the first time to evaluate the role of each factor in determining the overall reaction rate.
