Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop improved algorithms and software infrastructure for distributed large scale data mining. This problem relates to knowledge discovery from physically distributed data sources where data sharing is often not permitted (due to confidentiality or cost of data migration). Tfhe major challenge is deriving high quality knowledge from partial knowledge learned from data sub-sets. In this project we concentrate on three tasks:1. Algorithm development: through investigating and developing novel algorithms for three classes of data mining problems: classification, clustering and link association. These novel algorithms will be statistical foundations of distributed clustering and link analysis.2. Infrastructure development: through the development of a set of XML-based protocols for specifying, organising and communicating data and models between distributed data mining tasks.3. Application and evaluation: through using data from two important application fields: Mining Gene Expression Data for Drag Discovery and Imaging Data Mining for Geo-Hazard prevention.
