A number of important physical processes, such as dust resuspension, sub cooled nucleate boiling, interfacial gas transfer, forces acting on bodies moving in homogeneous flows, are all effectively controlled by the ability of particles bubbles and vortices to transport fluid from one place to another. Much of the research in this area utilises and inviscid description of the flow. The aim of this project is to significantly extend these descriptions the effect of viscous forces, by considering the viscous flow past the sphere moving in bounded and unbounded geometry. A significant aspect of the proposed work is an experimental study which incorporates new particle tracking algorithms (developed by Dr Dalziel). The visiting fellowship will significantly enhance collaboration between a Mathematics and Engineering Department, and the exchange of skills and collaboration built up between Dr Eames and Dr Dalziel, will enable future projects and collaborative to be developed.
