Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop instruments for tension measurement of textile yarns and other forms of strand, which improve on those currently available.Three instruments will be developed for use on running threadlines. The first will be a hand-held tension measuring unit based on contacting principles. The second will be a non-contact tension monitor based on monitoring thread-line vibration by optical means. The third will be an OEM or retro-fit version of the non-contact probe suitable for multiple threadline applications.Successful parts of the UK textile industry are developing into new areas, particularly those of high performance, technical and other industrial yarns and fabrics. This imposes requirements for improved tension monitoring and control to ensure product quality. The research work is related to a proposal being submitted to the DTI LINK S3IA programme, by SDL International Ltd. as lead partner. SDI will develop the research carried out into commercial products. Benson Turner, the UK's largest spinner-dyers will assist in developing the design specification for the systems to be developed and in full scale factory trials of ensuing prototypes.
