Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project addresses the design and application of a solid-supported IBX reagent for the oxidation of alcohols. Such materials will enable the facile separation of reaction products from reagents and, since they can be readily regenerated, will avoid the disposal of environmentally hazardous spent reagents and solvents. A macroporous resin will be utilised as the support since the macropores will allow the maximum surface area contact of the active reagent with the solvated substrate. In addition, this type of resin will allow the use of poor solvents that would normally be impossible to use in conjunction with the more common gel-type supported reagents. We shall investigate the design of the macroporous resin to determine the optimum morphology, size, loading and porosity of the support necessary for maximising the activity of the reagent. We then propose to characterise the use of solid supported IBX for the process scale oxidation of alcohols, and to evaluate the process economics of its use. Finally, we shall demonstrate the utility of the approach for a hitherto difficult industrially relevant oxidation.EngProg\
