The proposal addresses a major uncertainty in the understanding and modelling of premixed turbulent combustion, namely the influence of flame instabilities upon the burning rate. These instabilities can be particularly important at high pressures, in the operational regime of many practical combustors, but have hitherto been largely neglected. The overall aim is to quantify the effects of flame instabilities in the context of premixed turbulent combustion through an advanced predictive numerical model. The computational task is such that collaboration with the Daresbury Laboratory and its advanced computational facilities are an integral part of the programme, as is access to DNS results from Dr S Cant's group at Cambridge University. The necessary experimental data to check the validity of the evolving model will be drawn from the fan-stirred bomb at Leeds and a Japanese high pressure burner, while asymmetric, atmospheric, jet-flame data from Shell Global Solutions will be used as a check against the predictive results of the parallelised 3-D software.
