Summary on Grant Application Form
Documents often display a logical structure: for instance, a large corporate report will contain a title, introductory material, several chapters, each composed of one or more sections, and references or citations to other documents. The proposed project will combine the browsing and querying paradigms to investigate the focussed retrieval of structured documents . Focussed retrieval identifies those regions of document components that are relevant to a users information need, and displays to the user the best entry points to these regions (eg a particular section) from which the user can start browsing to access more relevant information (eg sub sections or adjacent sections).Models for representing and querying document for the purpose of yielding effective focussed retrieval will be developed. The document representation and querying mechanisms will exploit both content knowledge and structural knowledge. Based on the obtained document representations and human criteria for deciding what constitutes a best entry point, algorithms for selecting the best entry points will be devised. The proposed focussed retrieval approach will be implemented on a large test collection of structured documents, specifically built for this purpose. The effectiveness of the approach will be investigated by an extensive experimental evaluation.
