Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to undertake an analytical and numerical study of Bessel beams in general, and Bessel beams resonators in particular.A Bessel Beam (BB) represents the archetypal non-diffracting optical wave, In the simplest picture a BB is formed in the interference between inward and outward going conical waves represented mathematically by Hankel functions. This invites the conjecture ( which we have recently shown to be correct) that an optical cavity formed by one or more conical mirrors will exhibit BB modes. Such a cavity provides the potential basis for a BB laser. We will also investigate the wider properties of non-diffracting beams including pulsed BB and consider potential links with adaptive optics. While the lowest order BB has a central intensity maximu, higher-order modes have a zero on axis and the associated tubes of light have potential application as atom guides in atom optics experiments.
