Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Torotrak rolling traction variator is a continually variable ratio transmission device for use in advanced vehicles to increase fuel efficiency and reduce pollutants. The overall aim of the work is to improve understanding of the operation of the traction roller contacts at the heart of the device. This requires an advanced model of the contact, lubrication and in particular the traction performance of the rollers taking account of the important effect of roughness. The generation of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) films and traction will be investigated by developing suitable rheological models within a thermal point contact EHL analysis in close collaboration with fundamental experimental work at Imperial College. The resulting models will incorporate mixed/boundary lubrication effects and will be applied to the real variator configuration being developed and tested experimentally by the industrial partner. A full appreciation of fundamental issues concerning sealed for life durability, optimal roughness profiles for traction performance, conditions leading to thermal runaway, can only be obtained when a detailed understanding of the mixed film operation of these contacts emerges.EngProg\
