The programme involves the use of a range of physical organic and analytical methods to determine the mechanism of action of four catalytic asymmetric systems which were recently discovered in our laboratories. These catalysts induce high asymmetric systems which were recently discovered in our laboratories. These catalysts induce high asymmetric induction in the aza-Diels-Alder reaction of an N-aryl electron deficient imine with Danishefsky's diene. The mechanistic study will also involve an in-depth study of the scope of the catalytic processes, examining its applicability on different diene and dienophile combinations. The final part of the project will involve a detailed study to develop new synthetic methods for the conversion of the aza-Diels-Alder adducts into useful asymmetric synthons, particularly for the preparation of new potential alpha- and beta-glucosidase inhibitors.
