Commercial tools for heterogeneous information integration have focused on the physical extraction of data and there has been much less focus on utilising the semantics of the data sources. In recent work we have developed a formal framework for schema transformation and integration in heterogeneous database architectures. A novel feature of our framework is that high-level modelling constructs are specified in terms of a low-level hypergraph-based data model (HDM): this allows constructs from different modelling notations to co-exist within the same schema, and semantic links to be made between such constructs. A second novel feature is that schema transformations are automatically reversible setting up two-way transformation pathways between pairs of schemas which allows automatic translation of data and queries between them. The proposed project will investigate the following: A. how our framework for schema transformation and integration based on a low-level common data model can be practically applied and scaled up to real-world database integration problems;B. how much of a mediator's global query processing functionality can be automatically generated from two-way transformation pathways between source and integrated schmas;C. how heuristic and evolutionary computing techniques can be applied to schema improvement and
