Summary on Grant Application Form |
Understanding the flow behaviour of complex fluids is of strategic interest for strengthening industries concerned with the processing of complex fluids in optimising and controlling their present operations as well as in developing novel technologies. It has been widely recognised that rheometric flows do not provide sufficient constitutive information for complex fluids under industrial flow conditions, where shear and strong extensional deformation very often mix together. We propose to carry out computational and experimental studies of benchmark flow problems related to the processing of complex fluids. By combining LDA/DPIV and FIB techniques along with other flow visualisation techniques, we shall quantitatively characterise the model complex fluids and their sequence of non-linear transitions under strong flow fields. We shall be able to evaluate existing constitutive models of complex fluids and to provide further useful insight for their future improvements by comparing measured data of both velocity and stress fields with results of numerical simulations.EngProg\
