Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will examine the use of rhetorical and discourse structure information in the generation of flexible, high-compression summaries, and apply this to the summarisation of legal cases. We will first examine which structural properties are important in our source texts, annotate a small sample of --q and r-beck for interannotator reliability and stability. We will then develop annotation tools to semi-automatically expand this annotated corpus, and use it as a resource to build a tool which selects abstract-worthy sentences and their rhetorical status. This will be the input to the summary generator. For the development of this component, a variety of techniques will be examined, ranging from structured presentation of the extracted sentences to combinations of information extraction and regeneration of material from the extracted sentences. The summaries are intended to assist information foraging activities. The usefulness of the different types of abstracts will be evaluated, as well as different ways of visualising the source texts and their abstracts.
