Summary on Grant Application Form |
Support for experimental studies of quantum magnetism and novel phase transitions to be made with netron scattering & magnetization techniques is sought. Experiments will be performed to study the evolution of excitations in KcuF3 from the unbound spinons to longitudinal & transverse modes at the onset of 3-d order. Frustration in quantum systems will be studies by applying a magnetic field to Cs2CuC14 and Cs2CoC14 & observing the resulting incommensurate structure. The dimer materialTlCuC13 will be studied in a magnetic field to observe the possible bose condensation when the triplet dimer excitations become unstable. The spin 1/2 Ising model in a transverse field is the simplest nontrivial system that undergoes a quantum critical phase transition. As yet there are no detailed experimental measurements but studies of CoNb206 would enable theories of universality to be tested. A spin 1 system CsNiC13 will be studies so that the temperature dependence of the excitations can be compared with recent experiments. Ca doped SrTiO3 is a possible example of a 3-d quantum phase transition & will be studies with x-ray scattering techniques , and finally we plan to study the 2-length scale phenomena by using epitaxially thin films & varying the clamping of the surface.
