Summary on Grant Application Form
There are two novel aspects to this programme, photo-actuation and photo-rheological fluids. In the context of the current proposal, the terms photo-actuation and photo-rheological represent the associated changes in the dimensions and viscosity respectively of organic compounds when irradiated with wavelength specific radiation. The reason for investigating the two phenomena in this proposal is because some of the proposed classes of compounds for photo-actuation, namely spiropyrans and azo-compounds, also exhibit a photo-rheological effect when irradiated under appropriate conditions. A number of other organic compounds have also been identified which are capable of exhibiting photo-actuation and photo-rheological characteristics. These materials will be synthesised and characterised using conventional chemical characterisation techniques along with sensitive optical techniques for measuring displacement. A rheometer will be instrumented to facilitate in situ photo-rheological studies.EngProg\
