Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electrochromism results from the generation of different visible region electronic absorption bands on switching between redox states. Electrochromic anti-glare car rear-view mirrors have already been commercialised, with other proposed applications of electrochromic materials including their use in controllable light-reflective or light-transmissive devices for optical information processing and storage, sunglasses, glare-reduction systems for offices and smart windows for use in cars and in buildings. The proposed research is to study electrochromism in porphyrins, and then to investigate the effect on electrochromic behaviour of adding additional Donor and Acceptor moieties to the porphyrin entities. Finally photoelectrochromism would be studied. The proposed research is novel, as it is approaching the area of electrochromism from a synthetic background, hence allowing versatility and fine-tuning of the approach as the programme progresses. This work would be timely in that electrochromic devices are already being used commercially, but there is scope for improvement, particularly in the area of photoelectrochromism.
