Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project will develop novel piezoelectric actuators for use in Smart Micro-Air Vehicles. These will include linear and rotary devices using ultrasonic waves excited on micromachined silicon membranes and bimorph cantilevers. The devices will use thin and thick PZT film deposited directly onto platinised silicon wafers. The basic design of the ultrasonic devices has been developed under EPSRC project GR/K 89818 (now complete) and the first mask set has already been made on this project. The project starts with the fabrication of prototype devices using this mask set, includes a design study in collaboration with the industrial collaborator, and a review of the prototype devices' performances in relation to that required by real systems. The design study will include the setting-up of analytical and numerical models which will require good piezoelectric film property data. A novel interferometer system will be set up to collect this data. The redesigns will be laid out onto a new mask set and fabricated and tested in collaboration with industry.EngProg\
