Summary on Grant Application Form
Traffic congestion is resulting in significant costs in both economic and social terms due to lost time. Many compulsory strategies (e.g. road pricing, HOV lane and ramp metering etc.) have been studied/implemented so as to deploy and control road traffic, and so reduce congestion. These strategies, however, provide drivers very little information about what the near-future traffic conditions would be. Information on anticipated journey times according to departure time, would allow drivers to choose to travel at different time (earlier or later to avoid the unacceptable traffic jam), or even decide to give up their own car and use public transport modes instead. The project objectives are therefore to: (1) develop Novelty Detection techniques for estimating road congestion: (2) develop predictive algorithms for detecting potential congestion and forecasting journey times of buses and the general traffic; and (3) provide the public, over internet, information about road congestion and journey times at present and in the near future by applying these techniques. The output of this research will be techniques and software that can be exploited by traffic operators, information media and drivers. The research is timely given the national/international interest in traffic management and information broadcasts.
