Summary on Grant Application Form |
A nanoscale scanning electron microscope (nanoSEM), is proposed. The field emitter is ~1 nm in diameter and the whole structure including extractor and collector electrodes is a round 100 nm in diameter and in height. The extractor voltage is around 10 V and the electron path length can be as small as 200 nm which permits operation in air. If the electron beam is formed as a proximal probe no lenses will be needed and beam currents of 10-8A, with beam diameter of 10-100 nm, may be obtained. Contrast mechanisms and novel applications with arrays of nanoSEMs will be explored.
