Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to develop novel numerical models that describe the behaviour of rapid granular flows. Rapid granular flows arise in a wide range of process applications, including fluid catalytic cracking and the combustion o pulverised coal particles. Particle clustering or roping , for example, presents a particular problem in limiting the environmental impact of low NOx coal burners. The focus of this work will be conduct numerical simulations and light-scattering experiments to assess the validity of existing kinetic theories of rapid granular flows. Diffusion wave spectroscopy and particle image velocimetry (PIV) will be used to probe the dynamics of solid particles suspended in a rapid granular flow. These data, supplemented by numerical simulations, will be compared to kinetic theory predictions of the particle velocity distribution and flow viscosity. To assess the numerical codes developed, the predictions of the particle flow patterns will be compared to PIV images of the particle clusters.EngProg\
