|
Assistive technology is a major component in policies to enable older people to remain in homes of their own. The challenge to engineers and housing providers is to install AT in existing homes. Research has concentrated on new and specialised housing and not where the majority of older people live ie in order, mainstream property. The aim of the project is to explore the issues arising for both providing and maintaining AT in this type of property. A fundamental review will be undertaken of the provision of AT in existing homes from the perspective of the housing providers, the older users (residents) and the costs. The main fieldwork will take place in 10 case study areas (5 local authorities and 5 housing associations). It will involve surveys of actual homes, the assessment of existing provision, the potential for further provision and the costs of both installation and maintenance. Interviews and focus groups will also be undertaken with providers and residents.
