Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal will investigate the physical inorganic chemistry of organometallic aqua complexes of ruthenium, iron and osmium. We will prepare a range of complexes incorporating spectroscopic reporter ligands (eg [M(P-P) (CO) (H2O) 3]2+, P-P = bidentate phosphine) that can be systematically varied. We will then determine i. pKa values of the coordinated water ligands; ii. redox potential of the metal centres and iii. kinetics of intra- and intermolecular water exchange and ligand substitution reactions for these complexes. We will utilise a range of techniques including potentiomety and cyclic voltammetry, standard 1D and 2D multinuclear NMR and undertake collaborative experiments in Switzerland to measure variable temperature and pressure 170 NMR spectroscopy. There is a paucity of such data for organometallic aqua complexes and our work will have direct relevance to the use of these types of compounds for aqueous phase catalysis and medicinal chemistry.
