Summary on Grant Application Form
An investigation is to be made of water treatment using simultaneously ozone (in air) and a siloxane type solvent, flowing co-currently in an in-line mixer followed by a three-phase separator. Ozone dissolves much more extensively in siloxanes than in water. Many organic chemicals are also soluble in such solvents. Organic pollutants are expected to move from the water into the solvent and they react with ozone at a concentration much higher (and therefore react faster) than possible in water. Reaction to destroy pollutants will enhance the mass transfer process and avoid equilibrium limitations of extent of removal and ozone utilisation.Siloxanes (polydimethyl siloxanes) are benign water-like liquids which can decompose under aggressive oxidising conditions to carbon dioxide, water and silicic acid and so present no ecological threat. A novel three-phase separator designed by the proposer (and built as a large industrial plant by Monsanto) is to be used to recover the solvent, the remaining air venting to atmosphere. The plant is intended to operate using only air and electricity (diesel generator in industrial application); no chemicals are therefore required to treat the water.EngProg\
